3. Analysis of the Case Study
SWOT Analysis:
- Strengths: Strong brand recognition, established distribution network, experienced workforce.
- Weaknesses: Limited product portfolio, dependence on a single market, inefficient operations.
- Opportunities: Growing demand for bottled water, untapped markets in neighboring countries, potential for innovation in product offerings.
- Threats: Intense competition, volatile input costs, environmental concerns, and potential regulatory changes.
Porter's Five Forces:
- Threat of New Entrants: High due to low barriers to entry in the bottled water industry.
- Bargaining Power of Buyers: Moderate, as consumers have a wide range of choices.
- Bargaining Power of Suppliers: High, due to the dependence on key raw materials like plastic and water sources.
- Threat of Substitute Products: Moderate, with alternatives like tap water and other beverages available.
- Rivalry Among Existing Competitors: High, with numerous local and international players vying for market share.
Financial Analysis:
- African Waters' financial performance has been steadily declining, with profitability margins shrinking due to rising costs and increased competition.
- The company's reliance on a single market and limited product portfolio contributes to its vulnerability to economic fluctuations and changing consumer preferences.
Marketing Analysis:
- African Waters has a strong brand presence, but its marketing efforts are limited and lack a clear focus on innovation and differentiation.
- The company needs to develop a more targeted marketing strategy that resonates with evolving consumer needs and preferences.
Operational Analysis:
- African Waters' operations are inefficient, with outdated equipment and a lack of automation.
- The company's reliance on manual processes increases costs and reduces agility in responding to market changes.
Social Responsibility Analysis:
- African Waters has a limited track record in corporate social responsibility, particularly in addressing environmental concerns associated with plastic waste.
- The company has an opportunity to leverage its position to promote sustainable practices and contribute to community development.
4. Recommendations
- Product Diversification and Innovation: Develop a range of value-added products, including flavored water, mineral water, and functional beverages, to cater to evolving consumer preferences and create new revenue streams.
- Market Expansion: Explore new markets in neighboring countries with high growth potential, leveraging existing distribution channels and building strategic partnerships.
- Digital Transformation: Invest in technology and analytics to optimize operations, enhance customer experience, and gain insights into market trends. This includes implementing online ordering platforms, CRM systems, and data-driven decision-making tools.

This requires a commitment to cultural change, talent development, and strategic investments in technology and operations. By implementing these recommendations, African Waters can position itself as a leader in the African bottled water industry and contribute to the development of a more sustainable and prosperous future.
7. Discussion
Other Alternatives:
- Mergers and Acquisitions: Acquiring smaller competitors or entering into strategic partnerships could provide access to new markets and technologies. However, this strategy carries significant risks and requires careful due diligence.
- Cost Reduction: Focusing solely on cost reduction might lead to short-term gains but could erode brand value and hinder long-term growth.
- Status Quo: Maintaining the current strategy would likely lead to continued decline in market share and profitability.
Risks and Key Assumptions:
- Economic Volatility: The recommendations assume a stable economic environment. If there are significant economic downturns, the growth projections may be unrealistic.
- Competition: The recommendations assume that African Waters can effectively differentiate itself from competitors. Intense competition could limit the success of the proposed strategies.
- Consumer Preferences: The recommendations assume that consumers will continue to demand bottled water. A shift in consumer preferences towards other beverages could impact demand.
8. Next Steps
- Develop a detailed implementation plan: This plan should outline specific actions, timelines, and resource allocation for each recommendation.
- Communicate the strategy to stakeholders: This includes employees, investors, and the broader community.
- Monitor progress and make adjustments: Regularly assess the effectiveness of the implemented strategies and make necessary adjustments based on performance data.
- Invest in talent development: Identify and develop key talent within the organization to support the implementation of the new strategy.
- Embrace a culture of continuous improvement: Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making to ensure long-term success.
By taking these steps, African Waters can transform itself into a more agile, innovative, and sustainable company, ensuring its long-term success in a dynamic and challenging market.

Case Description
The case begins with a brief biography of Dr. Askwar Hilonga, and background on the myriad problems created by insufficient access to fresh water. Having grown up in rural Northern Tanzania, Dr. Hilonga observed first-hand the difficulties and devastation caused by this problem, such as disease and death; lack of water for toilets and for bathing and cleaning; and difficulty delivering pre- and post-surgical care, for example. These challenges are especially dire in sub-Saharan Africa. After obtaining Master's degrees in Chemistry and in Public Health and a Ph.D. in Nanotechnology, Dr. Hilonga developed and patented a water filtration system designed to purify drinking water at the point of use. Users provide samples of the local water they intend to filter. Dr. Hilonga tests the water and customizes a nanofilter, which, working in conjunction with two standard filters, comprise a three-tiered system standing about six feet tall. The filtration efficacy rate is 99.99%. Water is periodically re-tested and filters are replaced to ensure quality. With his wife Ruth, who has Master's degrees in Business Management and in Accounting, Dr. Hilonga formed Gongali Model Company, Limited ("GMC") in 2010. With some funding and an interest-free loan, he developed prototypes and worked in the Arusha, Tanzania area to educate communities and provide demonstrations of the product. GMC works with local entrepreneurs ("LEs") who operate one or more filtration stations with the goal of attaining 100 customers each. Most LEs rent the station and, after an initial $15 installation fee, they pay $3 per week rental charge and keep everything they collect over this amount. They are required to provide data six days per week to the GMC headquarters on the number of liters filtered and sold. This information is essential for GMC to determine when to replace filters to maintain quality. A small staff work at GMC headquarters in Arusha.
